Accessibility

How this website is built to be accessible to everyone

We are committed to ensuring that everyone can access the Pottermore Shop. This includes people with sight problems, hearing, mobility and cognitive impairments.

We have taken the following measures to ensure our website is accessible to the widest possible audience in line with best-practice accessibility guidelines.

Structure

  • Headings have been used to give an accurate overview of the content on each page
  • Page titles accurately describe page content
  • Tables displaying information are marked up in a way that makes the data relationships clear
  • Lists and other structural elements have been used appropriately to help users find information quickly and easily
  • Skip links are available, allowing keyboard users to jump straight to the main body of content - they are hidden from view but become visible on tab focus and will be read out by assistive technologies

Design

  • Foreground and background colour combinations provide adequate contrast so those with sight difficulties can view the site with ease
  • Text can be resized up to 200% without any loss of information
  • Link text looks different to from plain text, so it's clear what is 'clickable'
  • All links have visible keyboard focus indicators

Images

  • Linked images have alternative text that concisely and accurately identifies the destination of the link
  • Informative images have alternative text which accurately conveys equivalent information
  • Decorative images have empty ALT attributes, allowing screen readers to skip this element and move to more meaningful content

Forms

  • The labelling, position and design of our forms make it explicitly clear which areas require user input
  • Forms can be successfully completed irrespective of a user's sensory ability
  • If a user leaves a mandatory part of a form incomplete or provides incorrect information, error messages and extra assistance is provided
  • Components have been consistently designed to bring focus to important page elements

Technology

  • Links and form elements can be activated and accessed using both keyboard and mouse control
  • Links and any new additions to page content have been built to be recognised by assistive technologies
  • Having JavaScript enabled will enhance the overall website experience, however, you can still browse and buy books with it turned off

  2. We actively work with the Royal National Institute for the Blind (RNIB) to fully understand accessibility compliance requirements and to continually improve the usability and accessibility of our website.
  3. Regular website audits are conducted to ensure that standards are adhered to and maintained.

Key areas identified for improvement

We are looking into the 'Site language', 'Currency' and 'Book language' drop-down menus on our website as we have identified that Internet Explorer keyboard-only users are experiencing issues. Using an alternative browser such as Mozilla Firefox or Google Chrome can be used as a temporary measure until we have resolved the issue.

We are also looking into enhancing the keyboard focus when overlays are displayed. Additionally, we are investigating ways to provide extra messaging to users which explains that their session will automatically time-out after 30 minutes if no activity has occurred during this time.
