Which devices are compatible with Pottermore Shop eBooks?

Pottermore Shop eBooks are provided in EPUB format - the world's most popular and open eBook standard - and are compatible with the vast majority of computers and devices. In addition, the Harry Potter eBooks are available in Amazon Kindle formats for use by Amazon Kindle devices and apps.

Please note that the Japanese Harry Potter eBooks are only available in EPUB3 format and can only be read if your EPUB3 compatible device or reading service has Japanese font enabled. For compatible devices see Which devices are compatible with Pottermore Shop Japanese eBooks

Which devices are compatible with Pottermore Shop Japanese eBooks?

A selection of the popular devices that can be used to read the Japanese Harry Potter eBooks:

  • All Sony Readers for the Japanese market (with the latest firmware installed)
  • Sony Tablet for the Japanese market (with Reader for Sony Tablet version 2.1 or later)
  • Sony Xperia for the Japanese market (with Reader for Xperia version 2.1 or later)
  • kobo Touch (with the latest firmware installed, dowload to your device from kobo digital library only) Not currently avaialble on the Kobo App

Which reading services can I link my Pottermore Shop account with?

We have partnered with the following services to make it easy to send your Harry Potter eBook to your account. (Subject to reading service availability in your country.)

  • Sony Reader online account (US and Canadian based customers only)
  • Amazon Kindle (available in most countries)
  • Barnes & Noble NOOK (US customers only)
  • Google Play (This service is currently available in Australia, Canada, Japan, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the United Kingdom, and the United States)
  • Kobo (available in many countries)
  • Blio (US, Canadian and UK based customers only)
  • Scholastic Storia (US and Canadian based customers only)

The accounts are linked during the download process. In order to set up a linked account, please go to 'My books', select one of your Harry Potter eBooks to download and choose your reading service. You can view these linked accounts by going to 'My shop account' then 'Linked accounts'. Please note you can link to one account per reading service.

Will my computer support EPUB eBooks?

To read EPUB eBooks on your computer, you will need software that supports EPUB format, such as Adobe Digital EditionsOpens in a new window.

Will my mobile phone support EPUB eBooks?

EPUB eBooks can be downloaded to mobile phones which have EPUB eBook applications installed. Please check with your device manufacturer to see if these are available.

To read Harry Potter eBooks in Japanese on your mobile phone you will need to have installed an application that is compatible with EPUB3 and Japanese font.

Why do I need Adobe Digital Editions, or similar, to read an eBook on my computer?

eBooks purchased from the Pottermore Shop are provided as EPUB files (or EPUB3 for Japanese), and you will require software such as Adobe Digital EditionsOpens in a new window (which is free) to open them and to transfer them to your supported device or to read them on your computer. If you download directly to your device, such as a tablet, it may already have an app to read eBooks.

If you use Amazon Kindle, the Pottermore Shop also supports the Kindle formats, so you won't need additional software to read your eBook.

If you use Blio, or Scholastic Storia, the Pottermore Shop supports the XPS format, and the Blio or Storia apps is all you require.

How do I install Adobe Digital Editions on Windows PC?

  • Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/Opens in a new window
  • Click the 'Install' button at the bottom of the page
  • Click 'Yes' in the 'Adobe Digital Editions Installer' screen
  • Click 'Next' in the 'Set up' screen
  • Click 'Install'

Adobe Digital Editions will open when the installation is complete

How do I install Adobe Digital Editions on an Apple Mac?

  1. Go to www.adobe.com/products/digitaleditions/Opens in a new window
  2. Click the 'Install' button at the bottom of the page
  3. Click 'Install' again
  4. Click 'Continue' in the 'Install Adobe Digital Editions' window
  5. Select the disk where you want to install Adobe Digital Editions and click 'Continue'
  6. Click 'Install'

Adobe Digital Editions will open when the installation is complete

How do I add eBooks to Adobe Digital Editions?

  1. Open Adobe Digital Editions
  2. In the 'Library' view, click 'Library > Add Item to Library'
  3. Select the eBook file on your computer and click 'Open' or 'Add'

How do I transfer an eBook to my eReader using Adobe Digital Editions?

To transfer an EPUB eBook to your eReader using Adobe Digital Editions, you will need to:

  1. Connect your eReader to your computer
  2. Open Adobe Digital Editions
  3. In 'Library' view, an icon representing your eReader is displayed under 'Bookshelves'
  4. Using your mouse, click on the eBook and drag it to your eReader icon before releasing
  5. Disconnect the eReader from your computer

Adobe Digital Editions does not show my eReader. What should I do?

Make sure that Adobe Digital Editions is closed before connecting your eReader to your computer. Once you've done this, open Adobe Digital Editions and your eReader icon should be visible in 'Library' view, under 'Bookshelves'.

Please note, if you open Adobe Digital Editions before connecting your eReader, Adobe Digital Editions may not recognise your eReader, so be sure to connect your device first.

Can I put my eBook on multiple devices?

Yes, you can download each Harry Potter eBook for personal use up to eight times, so you can save a copy to your computer, eReader, tablet, mobile phone and any other compatible device. See Can I read eBooks on my device? for more information.

What devices can I listen to digital audio books on?

You can listen to digital audio books on any device that is compatible with the MP3 audio format, including:

  1. Sony Walkman
  2. Apple iPad, iPhone and iPod
  3. MP3 players by Sony, Archos, Coby, Creative, SanDisk and many more
  4. Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7 smartphones and tablets

Can I listen to digital audio books on my computer?

Yes, you can listen to digital audio books on your computer using any program that plays MP3 files, including iTunes, Windows Media Player, RealPlayer and WinAmp.

How do I transfer a digital audio book to my MP3 player, smartphone or other device?

You transfer a digital audio book on to your device in the same way that you would put a song or album on to it.

  1. Download your digital audio book and save it to your computer
  2. Connect your MP3 player to your computer
  3. Use your mouse to drag the files from your computer to your device

Transfer steps may vary depending on your device. Please check with the manufacturer for specific transfer steps for your MP3 player.

How do I transfer a digital audio book to my Sony Walkman?

  1. Download your digital audio book and save it to your computer
  2. Connect your Sony WALKMAN to your computer
  3. Start up Media Go on your computer. Media Go is the standard Sony software for managing files on your Sony device. You can find out more at: http://mediago.sony.com/enu/introduction/Opens in a new window
  4. Unzip your digital audio book files and use your mouse to drag them from your computer to Media Go
  5. Once your digital audio book files have been imported into Media Go, use your mouse to drag them to your WALKMAN within Media Go

How do I transfer a digital audio book to my Apple iPad, iPhone or iPod?

  1. Download your digital audio book and save it to your computer
  2. Double-click the zipped file to open it up and access the audio book MP3 files - see Downloading digital audio books for more information about zip files
  3. Open iTunes
  4. Drag the audio book MP3 files to the iTunes Library
  5. If you want the files to show up as 'Audio books' on your device:
    - Select the files in the iTunes Library
    - Press Ctrl+I (Windows) or command+I (Mac)
    - An information window is displayed
    - Select 'Options'
    - Set 'Media kind' to 'Audio book' and ensure that the 'Remember playback position' and 'Skip when shuffling' options are ticked
    - Click 'OK'
  6. Connect your Apple iPad, iPhone, or iPod to your computer
  7. If your device is set up to automatically sync your library, the audio book will be transferred. If you manually manage audio and video files, then drag the audio book files from the library to your device

Can I put my digital audio book on multiple devices?

Yes, you can download each Harry Potter digital audio book for personal use up to eight times, so you can save a copy to your computer, MP3 player, mobile phone and any other compatible device. See Can I listen to digital audio books on my device? for more information.

Can I put my digital audio books on a CD?

In accordance with our Terms & Conditions, you are not permitted to copy your digital audio books on to a CD.
