Lumos is an international children’s charity founded by J.K. Rowling after she discovered that eight million children across the world are living in terrible conditions in large residential institutions. These are often described as orphanages, yet fewer than 10% of the children are orphans. Instead, they are separated from their families because health, education and social services are not set up to meet the needs of all children. Those living in poverty, with disabilities or from some minority communities often fall through the gaps.
Life chances for children in these institutions are appalling: they are at risk of severe health problems, of being exploited or trafficked and later becoming unemployed, homeless and even committing suicide.
While this is a terrible problem, it is one that we can solve. Lumos works with children, families, communities and governments and is on track to facilitate the end of institutionalisation of children globally by 2040.
You can be part of that solution.
