Carlsen is one of Germany's biggest and most successful publishers of books for children and young adults. Carlsen was founded in 1953 and today belongs to the Swedish Bonnier group.

In 1954 Carlsen launched Pixi-books in a characteristic 10 x 10 cm format. At over 1,700 titles and more than 300 million copies sold, Pixi is the most successful book label of all time.

The Carlsen programme ranges from innovative board books for the very young over picture books and non-fiction titles to all-age novels. The paperback list, established in 2001, today comprises over 200 titles. The publisher is also known in German speaking countries for comics (for instance the German translation of Hergé's Tintin), as well as graphic novels and Japanese mangas. Carlsen publishes commercial and literary fiction by German authors as well as translations, particularly of English and American titles.

Carlsen has been the German home of Harry Potter since 1998, and by now has printed over 30 million copies.
